A Balanced Pond is a Happy Pond

Creating a natural balance in your pond means clear water. By balance we mean that everything in the pond is working together as a team. Ponds in nature never have more fish than they can handle, but typically we tend to put more fish in our ponds. Let's start with Mother Nature's tools: Submerged plants such as Anacharis and the free floating native Hornwort do wonders in "starving out" algae by out competing algae for nutrients. Critters such as Snails, Tadpoles and Pleccotamus do their part by consuming algae and pond detritus. Waterlilies shade the water, depriving algae of sunlight. When Mother Nature needs a hand, usually when a pond has a large population of fish, we can add filters, UV clarifiers, and algae controls.
