GARDENING

Who buys plants? Happy people, that's who! Plant People are excited, enthusiastic and engaged in life. They can hardly wait to get home and start gardening. Speaking of gardening, what does the word "garden" mean to you. To me it means sanctuary, beauty, peace, color and personal satisfaction, but then maybe I'm hopelessly old-fashioned. According to the Madison Avenue crowd, "garden" is a BAD WORD. How can this be? According to these experts we are evolving from a "do-it-yourself" to a "do-it-for-me" society and the word "garden" is now equated with "work." If that is so, then is "garden = work" such a bad thing. I certainly see lots of happy gardeners here at Nelson's who can hardly wait to get to "work." Summer is tough here in the Houston area, so I garden in the early morning. I love gardening so much that I often get so enraptured, I'll find myself still out working in the late afternoon, when it is really hot! Gardening is healthy work, too! Charles Frank Swize, grandpa of Mike Swize, our Water Lily Grower, worked tirelessly on his farm for almost 80 years, having passed just 6 weeks short of his 100th birthday. Many of you have ancestors who lived to a ripe old age by remaining physically active - especially active outdoors. It's all too easy to stay inside on a typical summer day, so if you are having trouble getting motivated, remind yourself of the health benefits of "working" in your garden...and get out there! Don't forget our Annual Ding Dang Sale starts July 4th, and Frog Days of Summer Plant Sale during the month of August.
