Did you remove pond waste and leaves accumulated from last fall? If not, better get it done now! As the pond temperatures begin to rise the pond detritus starts decomposing and rapidly releasing nutrients into the water and robbing the pond of oxygen. This sets up conditions for more algae growth.

Watch for toad eggs. If you have a smaller pond (150 gallons, and under), consider thinning their numbers, because too many can rob the pond of oxygen. However, toads are extremely benificial animals, they love to eat mosquitoes! So, consider letting these extremely useful critters share your pond with you.

Remove filamentous algae by hand or use a notched stick. If green water (unicellular algae) persists consider adding more scavengers and submerged plants, or a UV clarifying system.

When the marginal plants are growing vigorously begin fertilizing once a month until temperatures reaches the eighties; then fertilize twice a month.

Repot your tropical waterlilies in mid April thru May to get them ready for a great summer of blooms.

Fertilize the lilies and marginal plants every two weeks when the temps are 80 degrees and higher.

Prune decaying leaves and spent blossoms.

Feed the fish what they will eat in 3-5 minutes, this can be split into several feedings throughout the day. Fish are more active in the summer and will benefit from high protein and color enhancing foods.

Clean the filter as the pond dictates.

Check the submersible pump every two months for debris clogging the impellers.
