Tips for May & June
Posted on: Wednesday, November 01, 2006
If the annual Toad and Frog Love Festival hasn't commenced yet, you'll definitely see and hear the signs of it by May. For many pond owners, the music of toads and frogs is exhilarating and at the same time soothing. I consider the toads and frogs to be my nighttime alarm system. If they suddenly stop singing, I worry "Is there an intruder in the yard?" I like to say my yard sounds like Jurassic Park at night. Turn off your waterfall and lights at night if you don't enjoy the amphibian serenades or your neighbors are complaining. By the time May rolls around, things are heating up in your Pond. Hardy lilies should have been blooming for a full month; if they haven't, they probably need to be divided. Waterlilies can be divided and repotted at any time during their active growing season. If you haven't repotted your lilies, do so at this time. I usually put off repotting hardies, and save it all, both tropical and hardy lilies, for one mad, muddy, messy frenzy (and pay for it with sore muscles for days afterwards). Your tropical lily should be showing signs of life by now. If you haven't seen any new leaves, reach into the pot and feel the tuber. If it is mushy, buy a new lily. If it is not, lucky you. Bring the pot up closer to the pond surface for the sun and warmer water. Whatever you do, don't give up on your viable night-blooming tropical lily, it will show signs of life eventually. Night bloomers are typically the last to wake up after a winter's nap. Despite their laziness, they reliably survive winters in Zone 9. Bog plants are also due for a freshening up. Repot and trim off unsightly foliage. You will probably have triple the number of bog plants you started with. If so, it's time to start a bog garden or share them with your friends. Your fish are settling down after their own annual love festival. Continue feeding them daily. You may switch to high protein, color enhancing foods at this time. With your pond revitalization completed, it's time to kick back in anticipation of the long, lazy days of summer.
