Waking Up The Winter Pond

Zzzz… your pond may be sleeping if your waterlilies and other colorful aquatics have gone kaput, and the rest of your yard has acquired the “winter drabs”.  You can let your pond make its sleepy way through the rest of winter.  Or… you can WAKE IT UP!  We at Nelson Water Gardens know how to do just that with loud splashes of vivid color!

One of the many benefits of water gardening in the Houston area is the wide variety of plants that do spectacularly well in your pond through out our mild winters.  Louisiana Iris, Horsetail, Golden Spears, and Creeping Jenny are just a few of the plants that will do quite nicely.  But, one of my personal favorites is Variegated Water Celery.  It has a splash of pink to go along with its light green and creamy white leaves, it's so cute!  Water Hawthorne is also an excellent choice for your pond this time of year.  This plant has long, strap-like leaves that float on the water’s surface.  It produces a white and sweetly fragrant orchid-like bloom.  This aquatic really loves the cold weather and will stay in bloom nearly constantly through late spring.

Using our Cork Rafts and Floating Island Planters are great methods of adding riotous color to your pond.  The cork rafts are real cork and hold quart sized potted plants.  Whether your pond is small, large, or somewhere in between; we will have the right size raft for you!  If it is seriously contrasting colors you are after, try the richly hued Cyclamen with the chartreuse shades of the Creeping Jenny in one of our Floating Island Planters…it looks spectacular!  We have three sizes of Floating Islands to choose from, and we have pre-planted many of these for your convenience.  However, if you prefer, you can get an empty Floating Island Planter and let your imagination run wild!  We have a wide selection of winter blooming plants to choose from for an Island that displays your own uniqueness.

Before long, the warm days of spring will be upon us and your waterlilies and other sleeping aquatics will awaken from their winter snooze ready to be re-potted and show off their beautiful colors.
