Classic Summertime Plant Concerns

Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize! The more you fertilize the more blossoms you'll have. Waterlilies should be fertilized as often as twice a month in the summer for optimum growth.
Don't forget to prune old foliage and spent blossoms. Reach down underwater and remove as much as the stem as you can. Old foliage will be on the outside of the lily and will look yellow. Old spent blossoms are a little more tricky. Here's a trick, if you squeeze the bud and water squirts out -- it's a spent blossom. Even so, I've been fooled -- once I got up early and in a frenzy of energy I pruned my pond before the lilies started opening. Later that day passing by my compost pile, I noticed it was covered in waterlily blossoms. I guess I was a little over zealous!
Summertime in August means our annual Frog Days Plant Sale. All nursery stock will be on sale at 50% off during the month of August. Does not include Aquatic Plants. Be sure to pick up plenty of plants because....
