Devil’s Backbone (insert scary music ooooOOOOoooo)

With Halloween a few weeks away, I thought it would be a fitting topic!

This little gem is called “Devil’s Backbone,” at least that is its nickname…it is a type of Kalanchoe (yes, I had to google how to spell that!).  This little fella has been living on my porch for well over a year now, and as you can see he is THRIVING.  It is always a hard balance for me to know how much to water a succulent…don’t want to drown it, but do not want to cook and starve the poor thing either.  From time to time I splash a little water on it, and so far so good!  It could also be the fun pot we have it in too…that is probably more likely the case.  We don’t really have a tropical theme going on…but why not have a tiki pot on your front porch?  We live in the Heights, we are allowed to be funky and eclectic!  Not the point.

Back to my “Devil’s Backbone”…this cool plant sprouts babies all around the rims of its leaves…don’t know what I am talking about?  Here, check out a close up!

Pretty cool isn’t it?!  AND, these little babies just want to grow grow grow!  A strong breeze, or a graze as you walk past will knock them loose.  Even more exciting (at least to me….), these babies can sprout and grow almost anywhere.  We have babies popping up all over the place!!  No really, look really close at the bottom of my tiki pot….or here, I will zoom in for you…

Look at that!!  Not only have I NOT killed this plant, it is making babies!  Go me!  They are pretty fun, you should try it and see if your luck is as good as mine!
